Working scientifically

A key aim of primary science education is helping pupils develop the skills used by scientists to explore and understand the world.

Science Squad workshops support these skills by encouraging pupils to:

  • observe changes during experiments
  • ask questions about what they see
  • make predictions about what they see
  • discuss and explain scientific ideas
  • develop curiosity about how the world works

Our interactive demonstrations create opportunities for pupils to think critically and engage actively with scientific concepts.

Key Stage 1 Curriculum links

What makes our science workshops different is that they’re based on a story; a problem scientists need to overcome. Which reinforces the practical application of science to real life.

The typical visit from Science Squad includes:

Relevant curriculum areas include:

Materials

Pupils observe how different materials behave and how they can change during experiments.

Light and Shadow

Exploring how materials, distance and other factors influence the shadows we see and the light we don’t

Working scientifically

Pupils practise observing, asking questions and discussing what they notice during experiments.

Seasonal changes

Discussions around change in the natural world can be linked to observations made during demonstrations.

Key Stage 2 Curriculum links

For older pupils, workshops explore scientific ideas in greater depth, while maintaining a strong element of excitement and discovery.

Relevant curriculum areas include:

States of matter

Demonstrations help pupils observe substances change between solid, liquid and gas.

Forces

Experiments illustrate how forces affect movement, pressure and energy.

Energy and Electricity

Pupils explore how energy can be transferred and observed through dramatic demonstrations.

Materials and chemical reactions

Experiments reveal how substances can react and change in surprising ways.

Working scientifically

Pupils are encouraged to observe carefully, think critically and discuss the science behind each demonstration.

Science Squad workshops are designed specifically for school environments.

Science Squad workshops help reinforce classroom learning by providing pupils with memorable experiences that illustrate scientific ideas in action.

By seeing experiments performed live, pupils are able to connect scientific concepts with real-world phenomena, making learning more engagin and easier to understand.

Teachers often use our workshops to:
